With SemSem, Abeer Al Otaiba bridges family, fashion, and philanthropy.
Family matters: SemSem avoids cutesy coordination with modern cuts and eye-catching details.
Aside from a stunning sense of style, what inspired you to launch this mod mother-daughter line? “Supporting women’s rights has always been important to me, but after the birth of my daughter, Samia (‘Sem Sem’ for short), something changed. The profound connection that only a mother and daughter share moved me to create her namesake line with a charitable component: SemSem.”
The focus? “Ready-to-wear clothes for mothers and daughters.”
Tell us about this season’s charity. “For Resort 2016, we have partnered with the Association for the Development & Enhancement of Women (ADEW), an Egyptian non-profit that empowers women in impoverished regions. SemSem’s donation helps provide housing and living essentials to victims of domestic violence, and supports at-risk teen girls. For Spring 2016, we join forces with Women for Women International, which has supported nearly 429,000 of the most socially excluded female survivors of war in the world’s most dangerous places. While the line’s beneficiaries rotate, the focus on women’s empowerment and children’s well being is unwavering.”
