For the nation’s capital, few shades are more fitting than a bright vermilion. “Red is the perfect color for Washington, quite simply, because red is the ultimate power color and DC is a power city,” says local makeup artist Kari Ellen, adding that it also happens to be the lip color for the fall season.
Ellen says the key to wearing a standout pout is to “remember that bold lips require less work elsewhere, so keep the rest of the face clean and soft.” Rouge lips pair well with perfectly manicured crimson nails—Essie and Chanel have seductive contenders—and barely blushed cheeks can be achieved with Tom Ford’s Tainted Love lip and cheek stain.
