The very funny and wildly successful comedian/actor/writer/producer Paul Reiser is bringing a special, one-night-only show to the historic Howard Theatre this Saturday for an evening of “Comedy at the Howard.” In anticipation of the show, we caught up with the The Emmy-, Golden Globe-, American Comedy Award-, and Screen Actors Guild Award-nominated Mad About You star to talk about his career, his routine, and performing in DC.
What can people expect from this show? I'll tell you what they won’t get: there will be, guaranteed, no juggling, no circus acrobatics and most importantly, no political discussion whatsoever.
How do you continue to come up with great material? What's your inspiration? Easy. I tape every argument in my house and then type it up. Turns out it ain't just my house this stuff happens in.
Are you excited to be performing in DC? Very excited. I keep hearing how nothing ever gets done in Washington. I can assure you: This show will get done!
The Howard Theatre is such a great venue. Have you ever been? Never. I'm hoping there'll be signs. If you see me wandering around looking lost, point me.
You are a busy man, with a lot of projects going on. What are you most excited about right now? I have a couple of TV projects that I'm writing and producing that will hopefully get made before the end of the year. But truly the best part, for me, is just getting up and making people laugh. Nothing beats actual people, actually laughing right there, instead of eight months later like on TV.
Your career has been so impressive. Any career advice? Whatever you do, don’t make plans. Because they almost never pan out, but invariably, something better—that you never thought of—happens instead.
Tickets to the show are $35 for general, seated admission, and $75 for a VIP booth (minimum purchase of four tickets required). The Howard Theatre. 620 T St. NW, 202-803-2899
