Washingtonians are falling in love with Lorra Rivers’ one-of-a-kind handbags with an oh-so-modern edge.
“The Nikita clutch is the piece that really speaks to who I am as a designer,” says Rivers of the bag shown here, which was featured on Fox’s Empire. “She has very strong, unusual lines. She is representative of what’s coming down the pike for 2016.”
It’s hard to steal the spotlight from a knockout like actress Kaitlin Doubleday, but that’s exactly what happened during the first season of Empire when her character, Rhonda Lyon, was spotted with an angular clutch tucked under her arm. The bag’s designer, Washington native and Howard University alumna Lorra Rivers, recently sat down with Capitol File to tell us what else to expect from her attention-grabbing brand.
What inspires you? Lorra Rivers: “Scale, proportions, and sculptural aspects are what I enjoy playing with. I’m tactile, so mixing different leathers, showing dimension. I’m inspired by organic shapes and colors.”
What’s your goal? LR: “To not put something out there that’s already been seen.”
Who is the Lorra Rivers woman? LR: “She likes to stand out in the crowd, but in a sophisticated way. She’s not adorning herself with every trend out there. She is strategic with her [wardrobe], she’s modern, she’s chic. She has that little edge!”
