We catch up with Scandal star Katie Lowes to find out what the cast really does when the cameras aren't rolling.
We chatted with Katie Lowes, who plays Quinn Perkins in the hit ABC political drama Scandal, to find out what viewers can expect to see for the remainder of season five and what her castmates are like off screen.
What can fans expect for the remainder of the season? KL: We are a few episodes ahead of what has actually aired. From what I can tell, it’s such a juicy season. I mean you can tell how much things have changed just from the fact that Olivia Pope is wearing color. In five seasons, we’ve never seen her do that before and I think it’s such a telling sign of how much she’s changing. You can expect to see a lot of different sides of Olivia Pope that you have not seen before. Quinn is, oh gosh, [she’s] just really such a badass. You’re going to see in the rest of the season all the things she truly learned about how to be a gladiator, how to kind of run and steer the ship, and how good she’s become at doing that. And, of course, there’s all the steamy, amazing, unexpected twists and turns and OMG moments that keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s really fun to be on a political show set in DC during an election year. Our writers and Shonda Rhimes are definitely inspired by the news and the headlines, and what’s going on today in our here and now.
You and your castmates all seem like genuinely good friends. What’s the dynamic like between all of you on set? KL: It’s so awesome. Everyone has an amazing part that they love and Shonda and the writers have done such a good job at like writing us all really juicy and multi-dimensional characters. We all genuinely love acting together because it’s just such a joy to go head to head with people who really do their work. And then everyone’s just hilarious. It’s crazy. We’re on such a dramatic show that has such high stakes. When the cameras aren’t rolling, me, Kerry, and Guillermo [Diaz] dance and sing and run around like idiots. We joke around a lot. We’ve been on the show for five years, so we all know everyone’s significant others and they’re all also in our lives. We get to see each other at events and we watch episodes together at Jeff Perry’s house on Sundays. We have potluck dinners. It truly feels like a family.
Do you have any fun plans for the springtime? KL: My mom has a big birthday coming up, so my whole family is going on a boat tour down the Rhine River through Switzerland and Germany and ending up in Amsterdam. That’s going to be awesome. My goal and heart is set on going on a safari in Africa at some point in June. No concrete plans have been made yet, but keep your fingers crossed that I get there.
