With Valentine’s Day around the corner, we turned to Syzygy Events events designer Hillary Miko to help our very own Capitol File editor Amy Moeller celebrate the romantic occasion with her husband, Aaron.
Your living room before our Valentine’s Day Celebration.
At Syzygy Events, our clients bring endless sources of inspiration to guide us in designing their special occasions. When Aaron reached out to us for Valentine's Day help, he told us that his wife’s favorite movie was You’ve Got Mail. Since his significant other is Capitol File editor Amy Moeller, we were happy to give them a few tips for an early Valentine’s Day celebration.
New York style breakfast.
Start the day with a teaser of what’s to come. Since New York City is a character in the movie, make your first meal with Zabar’s bagel and shmear, which they can mail directly to you. Grab a copy of The New York Times and a bag of coffee from Starbucks for bonus love points.
With all the amazing coffees available in DC, why Starbucks? Well, we'll let the movie’s character Joe Fox—played by Tom Hanks—explain: “The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee. Short, tall, light, dark, caf, decaf, low-fat, non-fat, etc. So people who don't know what the hell they're doing or who on earth they are can, for only $2.95, get not just a cup of coffee but an absolutely defining sense of self: Tall. Decaf. Cappuccino."
A first edition of her favorite book makes a great gift.
Borrowing from the film, give her a couple mementos she can treasure like a bouquet of sharpened pencils and a beautiful edition of Pride & Prejudice, the favorite book of Meg Ryan’s character Kathleen Kelly.
Napkin hearts from Crate & Barrel add a festive touch to Valentine’s Day.
In the movie, Joe and Kathleen meet for lunch at New York’s beloved Gray’s Papaya to tuck into some savory hot dogs. Make the mouthwatering dish from the comfort of your kitchen, adding in extra toppings to go deluxe. Dress up the table with a fun napkin to add a splash of Valentine’s Day romance to your breezy meal.
Her favorite quote...
Put the typical "I love you" card to shame by taking her favorite quote from the film and having local shop Signs by Tomorrow create a custom decal she can show off on a home window. We opted to have Joe’s confession of love for Kathleen (right before she learned he was NY152 the whole time) memorialized.
Snag great pillows at Target or Pier One.
Transforming a space is all about the details. Mix in a few red and pink pillows to set the mood. Kathleen loves daisies in the film, dubbing them “friendliest flower.” This February 14, pick up a few bouquets of the cheerful white blooms rather than roses, which are often 300 percent more expensive now than they are during the rest of the year.
With a little inspiration in hand, you’re all set to create the most memorable Valentine’s Day yet!
