How 'Capitol File' Staffers Got Fit with Flywheel's Fly Challenge

On January 25, Flywheel kicks off its 2016 Get Fit with Fly Challenge, a four-week program where participants get fit alongside a Flywheel coach, enjoy a curated meal plan, technique workshops, and more. With three options available, Flywheel challenges riders to commit to either four Flywheel or FlyBarre classes per week, or three Flywheel and three FlyBarre classes per week. Capitol File staffers Amy Moeller and Laura Mullen tried the latter of the two options, dubbed the FlyPlus+ Challenge. Here, they discuss their experience.
Routine Prior to 28-Day Challenge: Amy Moeller & Laura Mullen: 2-3 spin classes (SoulCycle, Zengo, and Flywheel) per week.
Classes Completed: AM & LM: 25
Inches Lost: AM: 8.75 LM: 7
Pounds Lost: AM: 12.2 LM: 10.2
Biggest Challenge: AM: Going back to barre after that first class. Ten minutes in Laura and I exchanged horrified glances—“What have we gotten ourselves into?” We eventually learned that while it doesn’t get easier, it does start to go by faster—and once you see the results, you can’t quit. LM: Within two songs, it became wildly apparent that we did not know what barre entailed. It was like a scene from a movie when we looked at each other with blatant fear in our eyes—I was never coming back. Barre is hard, yet eye-opening. To this day I don’t like it, but it’s absolutely worth it.
What Food & Drinks They Missed: AM: Obviously the occasional glass of wine is fine, but with all of the local events and my near-nightly affinity, it was the first thing I missed. I learned quickly a good workout does a lot more for your sleep than a glass of wine. LM: While the meal plan didn’t really cut out much that I enjoy—carbs weren’t sinful—I love me some not-so-healthy, cheese-smothered chicken enchiladas. I substituted Amy’s organic cheese enchiladas, which helped curb the craving.
Favorite Spin Song: AM: I can barely bring myself to type this, but to my own surprise it was Bubba Sparxxx’s “Ms. New Booty.” You never know what songs are going to strike you! LM: This is a judgment free zone, right? I rocked out to Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Going Down.”
Favorite Barre Move: AM: Bridge. You lie back with knees bent, feet together. Put a ball between your thighs, lift your hips two inches, and squeeze. That inner thigh burn comes on quickly and fierce, and you just know it’s working. LM: Honestly? Not one. But trust that your instructor is helping your body get strong and healthy—even while you curse their name. AM: You definitely do that.
Outlook Since Ending Challenge: AM: I found out with just a few days left in the challenge that I’m pregnant! I am so thankful that I’d gotten into the challenge, because my doctor’s workout rule is simple: if you were doing it before, you can continue (within reason, and with some modification) throughout. And I’ve found that the workouts keep my nausea at bay and boost my energy, so I can make it through the day without wanting to crawl under my desk for a quick nap. I think we’re lifers now. LM: While forcing me to build 45 minutes of “me time” into my day, the challenge didn’t feel like an overarching change to my lifestyle. By making just a few small tweaks to my diet and morning routine, I saw nearly immediate results that left me feeling happy and healthy.
