Get ready to fall for FELA! again. After selling out its first run in 2011, the award-winning Broadway show premieres at the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Sidney Harman Hall today, January 29. The soulful production is filled with moving vocals, colorful costumes, and exciting choreography. The plot tells the true story of Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, who used his music to speak out against military regimes and thereby dedicated his life to (as the theatre company says) “the struggle for freedom and human dignity.”

Produced by heavyweights Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, and Ruth and Stephen Hendel, this year’s traveling production features a new famous face with the addition of Grammy-winning singer Michelle Williams (a former member of Destiny’s Child). Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones has stayed on as choreographer and director.

“Audiences can expect a production just as exciting as the Broadway production and just as exciting as the last time FELA! played at the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Sidney Harman Hall,” says Richard Kornberg, the production’s spokesperson. “FELA! has a number of fans who come to see the show multiple times and they want to see the same exciting show over and over again. That is exactly what they will get.” The musical only runs through February 10, so purchase tickets now at 610 F St. NW, 202-547-1122
