However, the Vahhabaghai sisters do like to escape their comfort zone on occasion, mainly to brainstorm. This often means perusing galleries and coffee shops, or taking weekly trips to New York City, where the film and art scenes serve as inspiration. “Capturing people” within the framework of architecture particularly interests Rouzita; the hows and whys infiltrate her perception and process.

For both, it’s the client needs that take a front seat. When three young male entrepreneurs needed a hip and hi-tech bachelor pad, Bita and Rouzita set to work creating a lounge-style suite, complete with iPhones that double as remote controls and an Xbox system that appears through the mirror in a bathroom. “It was a smart home system,” Bita explains. Their home-style solutions have even been known to push design boundaries. Describing the challenge of designing a room for another client, this time for two young sisters, Bita relays, “We took the attic and split it down the middle, giving them their own private spaces divided by a garden of faux grass and flowers.”

On the horizon are plans to launch a line of handbags this season, followed eventually by a lifestyle brand of fashion and home products called Ita: The Collection. Yet despite all this, Bita and Rouzita still find time to run Capitol PechaKucha, the DC chapter of the nonprofit organization that holds quarterly events for creatives who want to share their work and ideas, network and source jobs, and foster collaboration. Suffice it to say, the Vahhabaghai sisters are an ambitious duo, and while they’ve already changed the look of certain corners of the city, there’s no telling what’s in store. 1300 13th St. NW, Ste. 505, 202-518-0805
