As summer draws to a close, it’s time to switch gears and give both our wardrobes and our homes a fall makeover. Design guru (and acclaimed potter, designer, and author) Jonathan Adler gives us the inside scoop on the latest home décor trends and shares his secrets for glamming up your personal space in new and exciting ways. Check out what he told us:
How do you describe your design aesthetic? JONATHAN ADLER: Three words: modern American glamour.
What colors are currently on trend in the home décor world? JA: Turquoise and navy and cerulean and French blue is an “always” combination. But grey is definitely having a moment as the neutral du jour.
What is the hottest must-have home accessory? JA: Anything brass. It’s like jewelry for your home.
What home décor trends have you been noticing recently? Is anything making a comeback? JA: Wallpaper is back. I think people were afraid of it for a long time. We’ve added squillions of new patterns and lots of textural motifs to our collection, like our updated take on malachite and–my personal [favorite]–the gold splatter. It’s a great way to add some gold to your entire room.
Picking out lighting, especially bigger pieces like chandeliers, can be a daunting task for some—any tips? JA: Always buy a chandelier that is bigger than you think you need and more expensive than you think you can afford. And put everything on dimmers–all dimmers all the time for extra glamour (this is especially important as one ages).
You’re decorating a blank room. What’s the first item you introduce to the space? JA: Start with a bold patterned rug and you won’t look back.
What’s the one interior design trend you just can’t understand? JA: We live in an anything-goes world with no rules, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. But the one thing I just can’t get behind is taxidermy. It’s just sad.
What are three simple, quick, and easy ways to glam up a room in need of a makeover? JA: Move your furniture around: it’s probably been in the same place since the day you moved in, and there’s no one right placement. Swap your pillows seasonally: cozy wool in the winter [and] crisp linen in the summer. Add something brass: if you’re not surrounding yourself with metals, you’re not living.
What’s your number one design tip? JA: Forget the “rules” and buy what you love. If you love it, it will work.
Any exciting projects you’re currently working on? What’s next? JA: I’m always cookin’ up something. New stores, new hotel projects (Eau Palm Beach was my most recent), new products, new collaborations, like my collection of Vivofit bands. I’m a restless designer and the more I make the more I want to make.
What was the last item you bought for your own home? JA: I spend every day at the office making everything I could ever want, and I road-test it all in my apartment. My poor husband never knows what he’s going to come home to. I can’t wait to get one of our new Aspen sofas for our house on Shelter Island. It’s as comfortable as it is chic.
It's no secret that you are a lover of white jeans. What's your favorite brand and style? JA: I wear white jeans every day because they perfectly hide clay splatter. I only wear the skinny ones from Uniqlo and I probably have about 35 pairs. I live in constant fear that they’ll be discontinued.
