Designer Q&A: Trina Turk

The Southern California native gets back to her bohemian style roots.

April 06, 2011

Spring/Summer 2011 looks by Trina Turk

The epitome of tropical style, Trina Turk recently made a stop in DC at the Donovan House and gave us some insight on her spring/summer collection and a tip on day to night style.

Tell us about the inspiration behind your spring/summer 2011 collection.
TRINA TURK: My southern California roots, Palm Springs, artist Wayne Thiebaud, Rio, Brazil and bohemian graphic prints inspired me. Once you have a theme, it’s easy to put a collection together.

What’s the easiest way to transition from day to night on a tropical vacation?
TT: Heels and jewelry. I like to travel with lots of costume jewelry. It’s great to throw on with a pair of heels and transform your look from day to night.

You just launched a line of indoor/outdoor fabrics with Schumacher. Are you thinking about branching into interior design?
TT: I am. I made some pillows out of some printed fabrics for our spring/summer look book and realized we have something here. So I began looking for a partnership and collaborated with Schumacher. It’s interesting but we definitely need to change the scale. What works on a blouse doesn’t necessarily work for a sofa.

What else in on your plate right now?
TT: We’re working on opening a store in Dallas and we’re expanding our menswear line, Mr. Turk.

Beauty Trend: Lush Lashes

Go big with lash extensions at Nusta Spa.

March 16, 2011

We’ve found the secret to lush, long-lasting lashes, and her name is Jennifer Fitzpatrick. This dynamo of extensions is a certified lash stylist, an important distinction when you consider she’s micro-gluing tiny synthetic fibers to your natural lashes, yielding a sumptuous, lengthy fringe with no need to curl or add mascara. The eyelash-extension trend is catching on across the country, and Fitzpatrick, who works at the eco-friendly, serenely cozy Nusta Spa, can give you natural-looking fills or dramatic “stop-traffic” eyes.

For those (rare, we hope) times when you want to go truly Showgirl, she can also do color, add Swarovski crystal gems or attach glitter lashes. The regular process takes about two to three hours, and the extensions last about six to eight weeks, with proper maintenance. Prices start at $350 for a full set.
